How a card is made

Four steps, none of them quick.

1. 

   01 / The type

   Picked one sort at a time.

   Letters come out of the case backwards and upside down and stand in a composing stick. Spacing is settled at the bench with strips of lead.

2. 

   02 / The forme

   Locked in iron.

   The set type goes into a chase, is packed with furniture and driven tight with wedges. Done properly you can lift the page by one corner.

3. 

   03 / The impression

   Adjusted in fractions of a millimetre.

   Depth is set by the packing behind the platen. Too little and the card reads flat; too much and the counters punch through.

4. 

   04 / The sheet

   Cotton, and nothing coated.

   Soft thick cotton takes an impression the way a coated sheet never will, and holds the pressed edge crisp instead of springing back.
