About us

One press. One thing made on it.

House of Press is a letterpress studio in India. We make business cards, and we make them the slow way, because it is the only way that produces the thing people actually come here for.

What we do

We only make cards.

A studio that will print anything is a studio that is good at nothing in particular. We set, lock up and press business cards, and turning down everything else is what lets us get the impression right on the ones we take.

The paper is Cordenons Wild, a soft cotton sheet that takes a deep bite and holds the pressed edge crisp instead of letting it spring back. The ink is carbon black. Both are chosen for one reason, which is what they feel like under a finger.

How we work

Nothing here is automated.

The press is hand-fed. One sheet goes in, one sheet comes out, and somebody is standing there for every one of them. A run of five hundred cards is five hundred pulls of a lever.

That is why the lead time is measured in days rather than hours, and why we would rather talk to you about the artwork before the forme is locked than after.

Start an order

Wood type blocks, A and Z. A hand roller for inking a forme. A stack of letterpress cards, tied.

Where it came from

Six hundred years of the same idea.

Korea cast metal type in 1377. Gutenberg put it under a screw press in Mainz. Offset made all of it commercially obsolete in a generation, and then, once nobody needed it, made it valuable again.
